Coexist by the xx is certainly my favorite album of 2012. I know 2012 hasn't ended but I'm pretty sure of this one, and Lana Del Rey's Born to Die to most likely chart my second.
I really enjoyed reading their interview on Pitchfork. Musically, this album is a continuation of their first album, but lyrically they are quite different. I liked their abstraction from the first album, especially metaphors for sex, but I am also liking their directness in this second album. The first album was shy and yet very sexual, especially off 20 years olds, but that you cannot find in this one. They still sing about love. They still sing about "you" against "me", and there is still no "she" or "he" or any other titles, but this time they introduced "we" and "us" which they couldn't have done in any better way than in the song Our Song.
I was fortunate enough to see them live on the release of this album. Despite being extremely ill, I could tell how talented these three folks are. It was beautiful to say the least. It was a beautiful beautiful evening.
ファーストアルバムのアイディアをそのまま進めたセカンドアルバムゆえ、ファーストアルバムのように「今まで聴いたこともない」ような驚きはなかったものの、良質なアルバムで胸が痛いです。このアルバムがなかったら、ぶっちぎりでLana Del Reyの『Born to Die』が今年のベストアルバムだったのだけど。２０１２年度個人ベストアルバムはこれに決定ですね。
セックスの隠喩の多いセクシャルで、かつシャイな前作に比べると、ストレートな言い回しの悲しいラブソングばかりの今作。『Angels』『Missing』『Our Song』『Tide』が今のところ印象深い。『Our Song』は曲のアイディア自体、シンプルながら本当に優れているなと思います。（今、試しに訳そうとして、出来なかった。そういえば日本語ではweもusも「わたしたち」になりますね。）
で、この『Coexist』アルバムリリースのまさにその日に、彼らのコンサートに行ったのですが、私、体調が非常に悪かったのですが、それでも本当に良いのがわかるコンサートでした。アレンジが巧みで、CDですごく好きな曲と、ライブですごく気に入った曲が、まったく違うという結果で、面白かったです。『Crystalise』がライブでは印象薄くて、『Islands』が逆に思い出深かった。パフォーマンスもしっかりしていたし、光も綺麗だったし。途中、本気で泣きそうでした。
ちなみにTSUTAYAがthe xx取り扱ってなくて、びっくりしました。マーキュリー賞まで取ってるのに。ファーストアルバム、プラチナ取るくらい売れたのに。
