Spring in Tokyo

I compiled a 24 seconds clip using some footages from my iPhone movies taken between May to June. Life in Tokyo is über colorful.

I am not a video person and I've always preferred audio or still images as methods of obtaining information or recording memories. Though, after I made this film from my London trip, I began to record moments by video more often and above is the result of it. Not much thoughts involved, it is a simple cut and paste compilation of my five weeks or so.
Now that Instagram got a video feature, I would like to make compilations of those Instagram videos when I get enough clips to do so.

The first and last bit of the clip was shot using Time Lapse Camera HD iPhone app and Veho MUVI X-Lapse. I again got it from MobileFun which sells mobile phone accessories online and it looks like this:

It literally works like the cooking timer:
(images found from Google Image Search)

The upper part rotates in steady motion and hence you can take a full 360 view time lapse films. You can't however change the speed; it is pretty an analogue product.
What bother me the most is that it makes a steady noise throughout. It even makes a loud cooking-timer-like-noise at the end. I was hoping to shoot the urban landscape of Tokyo from a high-rised building but its constant noise make it impossible for me to shoot from a posh cafe while sipping a cup of coffee.
Having said that, it's fun to think about what to shoot with this product and broadens the expression of iPhone movie.

Bittersweet LDN in Film

Creating movies is a good way of recording your lives, I just realized.

I was back in snowy London last March for about a week. Above is a 47 seconds movie that I compiled from the clips I took during the trip.

I will warn you that it is not meant to be anything artistic nor creative. It is just a holiday movie afterall and you probably won't find it too exciting. It does capture emotion and mood of my week, so it is still a valuable record of the trip for me personally.

It's basically just a movie collage, cutting and compiling short clips together–the technique you see everywhere on YouTube. Nothing complicated. In fact I shot all my footage using my iPhone 5. The trick is though, to edit the film down to a short length. This was always the problem I had with the movies I take; they were lengthy and I never opened my movie files after taking them and they weren't so fun to watch. Be selective, make it short, and films are great way to summarize your lovely memory.

VARSITY London is Live!

I've assisted a project VARSITY London by Megan Wray Schertler (editor) and JT Yean (designer).
It's a magazine that catalogues almost all MA fashion graduates of 2012 from CSM, RCA, and LCF.
It is aiming to be an annual magazine, allowing audience to compare the talents from different schools and different years.

Currently VARSITY London is available online.
From the site you can also download PDF (for non-Flash supported devices), and on Issuu (for slower internet connections).

Here is how the site looks like:

Some sample spreads:

Wanna see more? Of course you do! Please visit VARSITY London website to view the full magazine.

VARSITY London is also throwing a launch party on SimmonS in Kings Cross on Thrusday 18th October 2012. Please RSVP tovarsitylondon@gmail.com!

VARSITY London

varsitylondon.co.uk

#csmgraphics2012 Industry Private View

Positive press reviews all the way, great feedbacks from industries and friends, happy tweets continues to come in, and most of all we are all satisfied with the outcome and I think we can call the show as a success.
The private view was a great opportunity to thank tutors that I owed a lot from. It was a rare opportunity that people I love gathered together. Thank you all for the special evening.

Due to overload of work and sentiment, I took no photos for past few days.  But thanks to Chole True, who has been a diligent photographer, documenting behinds the scenes and making of the show.
Her photographs here capture the spirit of the show as truly as I remember. Here are my loving people making the show we love:

Degree Show Signage WIP

Signage for the degree show is slowly but surely taking shapes.
Above is sexy Boo promoting Illustration pathway.
Bellow are the initial tests:

While Duarte is mainly responsible for the digital side and Esa for print, I have been in charge of signage for the degree show.
It is a rather slow process. We have already used 1.2km (!) of yarn so far and still counting. This signage idea could not have been executed by myself and is really a collaborative effort of people involved in this show. Thank you everyone who worked on it, I am especially grateful because I know everyone's all so very busy preparing for your own space for the show.
The signage is created by: JT, Alessia, Lillian, Boo, Clare, Kate, Kristina, Matt, Pietro, Duarte, Nathalie, Sara and Renata, Together, we are Cool Calm Collective.

It turned out, this is such a nice collaborative outcome to finish the course with. It involves a lot of people that I've never worked with before.
Still in a process of finishing up, but getting positive feedbacks around, we are pretty excited about it.

About mslocation

On social media, I unify my ID to "mslocation". Usually people tend to pronounce it like "M. S. location" (em, es, location), but it actually has a meaning behind it. It comes from the word mislocation (as in to mislocate) and female title address Ms (as in Ms.Yokoyama).
My good friends from Holland gave it to me when I moved to London in my last year of study. It suggests that "you are supposed to be in Holland and you are being mislocated in London", which is rather a touching thing for your old friends to tell you.
You can question why it is not MissLocation, which makes correlation to mislocation more evident, is simply because we didn't really thought through enough when we named it (and hey, it still works so it's cool).

I never expected that I'd be using it all over the Internet, but that is pretty much what has happened. It's useful to have a consistant ID, otherwise it's very easy to get confused by the amount of social IDs these days.

In addition, I began to think lately that mslocation (ie being mislocated) summarizes my life. Constantly moving and seeking for new homes. Hopefully that'll continue throughout my life.

to mislocate/ mislocation(間違った場所に置かれている)という単語と、女性の敬称であるMs.

Baby CURA is born!

Our lovely lovely little baby CURA is finally born!
Born, signed, sealed, delivered from Calverts in East London.
Our amazing team with publications and also Jasmine's wallpaper in the background (it was only a coincidence that Jasmine was there but hey it's nice). And yes wow I am tiny.

400 copies received at CSM. And this being CSM, we are equipped with a supermarket shopping trolley, specially for occasions like this one. This is me running with the trolley with full happiness on my face:

The moment of truth.

Check out the happy times.

Going around the building in style.

Duarte's signature pose.

Also, here's another nice photo from the proofing at Calverts.
JT and I are a happy bunch, and Franek looking... fierce?

Illustration Work In Progress Show Opens Tuesday

Central Saint Martins, BA Graphic Design, Illustration pathway guys are having a show, which opens from Tuesday.
And the poster that Clara Yee designed for it is absolutely stunning! I am in love!
She has taken color palettes of participating students' works and using those colors, she created this nice typography. It's really funny how colors really represent individuals. Clara has taken colors from people's works but I suppose what people wear tend to be similar to what they use in their works, and that's why without not knowing a lot of people's works, I can really see how those colors match with their personalities. I wish I was participating too and she made one with my works too!

Their show website is so charming too. Even the favicon is adorable. Making me jealous!

The show takes place at Blackall Studios in Shoreditch. I am definitely attending the private view on Tuesday night, so see you there!
