Living Abroad (A Month in Byron Bay)

I stayed in the eastest point of Australia, Byron Bay, for about a month in last February.

My initial intention was to focus on reading and studying while distancing myself away from busyness of Tokyo city life, but it somehow turned out as a way for me to try out a healthy life style–Jogging, swimming, yoga, meditating, cooking, stretching, buying food at markets, sticking veggie, cycling... Thinking back, I'm quite amazed about how healthy I lived there, without any stress. It's been over three months since I came back to Tokyo for the job and my eating and exercising habit are nowhere near as good as the time back in Byron. I wonder why all those things that were so easy and felt so natural back then are so hard to practice here in Tokyo.

Australia turned out to be quite different from my expectations; in a very positive way. In comparison with all the places I have visited in my life, I think people in Byron Bay were the friendliest; maybe competing the first place with people in Thailand.
Byron bay is a touristic destination, but it naturally attracts happy bunch of people. The taxi driver who took me from Goldcoast airport to Byron Bay on the first day described the town as “a place for surfers, hippies, and party-goers”. I cannot summarize the entire Australia as I only saw things in this tiny town of Byron, but I had an amazing time and I would love to go back. It certainly lacks vibrancy of Asia and cultural or historical stimulation of Europe, but the place was calming and made me feel healthy inside and outside. In addition, to my surprise, the food was simple but very tasty.

Kob Kun Thailand

Thailand was already an independent nation even before the World War II, unlike its neighbors which all became independent after the war. Thailand is the only South East Asian country that was not colonized. It must've been pretty tough getting caught in between British empire in its west (Burma, Malaysia, Singapore) and French colonies in its east (Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos). In other parts of Asia I've traveled (Indonesia, Hong Kong, Macau), 19th Century European influences could be felt but Thailand was an exception for that historic reason.

Thailand has a monarchy, and it is meant to be ceremonial hence it shouldn't have any power to the politics. Though in reality, Thai monarchy intervene with their politics, and the law bans any criticism towards the royal family. Such law exists in other countries too but those laws are usually never put in practice. That, however, is not the case in Thailand–you will be penalized. So be cautious when you talk about Thai royal family...

Photos from Morocco

I'm finally putting together photos from my Moroccan trip in April on my website. Here are some selections:

You can visit my website to see more photos.

We went on holiday to Morocco in April. That turned out to be right before the final hand in, which I now think was quite suicidal, but it did certainly provided me to finally reflect upon myself. We were riding long hours in taxis (yes we took taxis to go to Sahara desert), and probably for the first time I thought through about school, leaving London, and my new life in Japan.

I don't know if it was the long car ride or the beautiful nature of Morocco, but others who were traveling with me were thinking about deep stuff like "meaning of life" and "how small we are". Quite sadly, my thoughts revolved around practical matters and plan of actions rather than philosophical things that others were getting into. That made me feel how shallow I am, but I won't lie.

During those hours of car rides in Morocco, this song Exodus 04 by Utada was playing repeatedly in my head.
The lyrics goes like this:
Through mountains high and valleys low
The ocean, through the desert, snow
We'll say goodbye to the friends we know
This is our exodus '04

#csmgraphics2012 Industry Private View

Positive press reviews all the way, great feedbacks from industries and friends, happy tweets continues to come in, and most of all we are all satisfied with the outcome and I think we can call the show as a success.
The private view was a great opportunity to thank tutors that I owed a lot from. It was a rare opportunity that people I love gathered together. Thank you all for the special evening.

Due to overload of work and sentiment, I took no photos for past few days.  But thanks to Chole True, who has been a diligent photographer, documenting behinds the scenes and making of the show.
Her photographs here capture the spirit of the show as truly as I remember. Here are my loving people making the show we love:

Belgrade

I went to Belgrade in Serbia with fellow DSI (Digital Special Interest group) mates to attend Resonate Festival. The festival was fantastic with surprisingly amazing line-up, and we really had good time in Belgrade too.

I had no preliminary knowledge of Belgrade or Serbia. My knowledge was so limited I only discovered after going there that it used be the former Yugoslavia. People spoke English, we had good weather, food and beer were nice and cheap, I can only recommend the place. Rebecca, an American tutor who came there with us said that the entire city is a hipster town like Brooklyn of NY or East End of London. Graffiti covers the walls around the city, there are many nice bars around, it reminded me of Berlin.
Oh and from street name signs to graffitis, the city had incredibly interesting and amazing typography. That too was a good surprise.

Dark Matter Fashion Shoot

This post will contain a lot of photos of myself, but I promise it goes beyond 'look at me' or am I good-looking/bad-looking kind of thing.

A collaboration between photographs shot by Cynthia Kodi Chen Barbachano and a dress designed by JT Yean. The dress piece is titled Dark Matter (this was first official use of Yava font) and was inspired by dark matter and oddities. I also bought this dress off JT last year and I love it.

We did a little experiment after the shoot. Each of us selected and edited five photos. This way, you can see we all had different favorites (for instance my five choices didn't overlap with neither JT nor Cynthia's) and we all pulled out different elements when editing the photos. It's an interesting comparison, highlighting our individual preferences and perceptions.

One photoshoot. Three graphic designers. Three perceptions.

JT's select (a fashion designer's point of view)

Cynthia's select (a photographer's point of view)

My select (A model's point of view)

Funny how JT's images have grey color-tones, Cynthia's have very light color-tones, and mine have very dark ones. Also, other two chose action shots, but I liked to stick to the images that did justice to the interesting material of the dress, a part from the last one.

You can also find out more about the dress on JT's website.

The photoshoot was also assisted by Nathan Jihiri. Thanks Nathan x
