Introducing SE7EN COLORS

Five full weeks have passed since I officially joined a design firm Concent Inc. in the very heart of Tokyo.
In Japan, it's common to employ graduates all at the same time, once a year. This type of employment system has several advantages for both employers and new employees. For instance we get to do training together before cracking on with the professional day to day work. The seminars we attended range from conceptual “what is design” types to business manner classes at an external venue. I found both conceptual and practical seminars very helpful and that definitely was an advantage of getting employed here in Japan as I doubt design studios in London offer that kind of training weeks.

There are seven, including myself, who joined the firm as recent graduates. Those six, with various design backgrounds, are all exceptionally talented. I am extremely fortunate to have such valiant peers, whom I can trust and respect.

We created a short movie and accompanying website that introduce seven of us to the rest of the people in the company.

We also created a website (http://sustoco.concentinc.jp/se7en/).
Unfortunately (or rather understandably) everything is in Japanese. The main concept of the site is to describe seven of us through key words (tags) rather than from reading individual profiles. We figured people wouldn't really care who Shiho is, but if you happen like the magazine Monocle, you might be interested in talking to Shiho, when you know she also loves that magazine. The site aims to provide a topic of conversation, and is intentionally left vague. It invites the people at the office to ask us questions in the later opportunities to come.

Seven of us have completely different characters and interests. The only mutual thing that connects all of us is that we take design very seriously. That goes true for the rest of the peple at the office. That led to the short films where we talk rather seriously about the subject of design.

Coming from Central Saint Martins, where the importance of verbal expression in design was valued highly, I thought I was trained well in speaking about design. Though after hearing myself speak, I sound rather abstract and vague. I sound like I am saying something good but they are rather superficial and anyone with intellectuality can spot the shallowness of my speech. Even with flaws, I'm glad I had the opportunity to record my thoughts at the very beginning of my professional design career. Speaking about it, as well as listening myself speaking it, make me want to think even more about my design philosophy. Listening to other six of them was also inspiring. I admit I was jealous of fluency of how others spoke about design with solid logic and clarity.

Website Update

I updated my website shihoyokoyama.com

I added a not-so new project VARSITY London, and added few photos from Newcastle and Amsterdam from the summer.

I don't update my website as much as I probably should do, and I rarely visit it myself but now that I visit it, I quite like how curated it is. While my facebook, twitter, instagram or this blog, tend to have my ideas and thoughts all over the places, the website only includes finished stuff, which is rather calming. It sort of is how I'd like my personal room to be.

I also organized what was becoming a chaotic top page with all the animated gifs.
I'm getting rid of the less successful ones, but I feel sad deleting all of them at once so I'm going to post them here as a memorial:

Five Days until the Degree Show

Central Saint Martins graphic design has 180 students this year. With such a large number of students, there are so many different relationships within the course. That variety of relationships is what makes us and the characteristic of our year.
So, we have developed this identity system that looks into the relationships between students.

Website is in a good state. Lines look supa sexy.

Twitter background looking cool. (It is the official CSM Graphic Design twitter background, as well as some students' twitter accounts including mine)
Which by the way has impressive 6,000+ followers. I bet CSM BAGD is the most followed graphic design course twitter account in the world.

Facebook event page has a nice graphics too.

Cards sent the industry looked amazing. So was the press releases that were sent. Maps have been sent to the printer. Signage taking shape. It's progressing alright! I really am happy the way things are turning out that they have the same visual language, but are adopted in different situations and medium.

In the part of the website where the public cannot see, this is what happening among students. We calculate 'closeness' between students by gathering data on their pathways, choices of briefs, as well as students make their own groups and a little bit of social networking is going on. Using this data, leads the graphic. Genius programming and data visualization by Duarte. He is a genius.

As mentioned before, this BAGD identity project is a collaboration project with Duarte and Esa.
This is a very rare degree show that is completely student led and all this couldn't been possible to be realised by amazing organisation by Kate.

Two Weeks until the Degree Show

Being busy with the work for the degree show. Not at all for my space, but for website and branding of BA Graphic Design.
Working with Esa for the first time, and as always Duarte. Also working closely with Kate and Agostino.

Visit our degree show website, which is currently looking like this:

You can check Facebook event page.

If you are in London, you'd notice massive digital billboards promoting our show. Designed by Kate, Agostino and Krista.

It's nice to be in a year that we feel that people, both our year group and the college, actually do care about the show.

Other parts of the college is looking exciting too. It will be fun!

A Week with Cura Website

Intense week of web design for Cura project. Working with Duarte intensively for the site and Franek and JT for overall Cura project.
You will see here that we pretty much had different ideas every single day for first half of the week.

Friday 20th April
Back from Morocco. Slept a bit and went to school. Welcomed by this lovely website. This is where it all began... at least for me. Thanks to Duarte for setting this up while I was away.

Saturday 21st April
A little break from web design. Cura group (ie Duarte, Franek, and JT) worked for poster design of Rathna's Wednesday lecture. We used her first slide as an inspiration and made our version of it.

The outcome poster looked like this:
Photo of us with the poster even made it to her lecture slide :)

Sunday 22nd April
Incorporating CCC signature color we proposed, when we have done branding for them, on to the website. As well as use of the font we made for them.

Monday 23rd April
Because the direction of the website has changed from the initial idea and we are now only having only a  limited number of articles, we thought perhaps one page website is a good way forward. Readers may read things from top to bottom, if the site only has few articles. One page site is also quite close from the publication.
This is a design that has an accordion for each article. Reader can open and close articles, and can read the ones he wants to read.

Tuesday 24th April
The problem about one page site is that it is quite easy to get lost of where you are, which article you are reading. So, we figured some kind of subtle navigation that indicates which article you are at now would be helpful. Hence we ditched the lovely accordion we had the day before and went for this:

Wednesday 25th April
We had a turning point with a meeting with Rebecca. She is full of ideas and meetings with her always turn up in unexpected ideas and directions, which we always enjoy. With her advice, we  realize that our web design was lacking concept. There were rationale behind our choices, but the we can't deny that the design lacked strong concept. We were somewhat treating the brief as 'let's make those articles look nice and make them work' exercise. Striping down the brief to its core, going back to where we initially started the project at, really helped. And Rebecca successfully made us realize within such a short amount of time. Design of the site did not have the feel of progressiveness, when Cura was about progressive and expanding notion of curation.
Then started the idea of the world of Internet flowing behind the articles. Each articles to be hyperlinked excessively, and those linked sites act as backgrounds of the article, when hovered.
Some trouble of flash becoming on top of the article, which was fixed by Duarte later:
We were simultaneously finalizing the design for one page site-idea, getting the details defined. Just as a back-up plan.

Thursday 26th / Friday 27th April
Then came the defining details of the site. Including typography, linking sites, layouts, music playlist. Adding and fixing things.
Saturday 28th / Sunday 29th April
And finalizing everything. Making the look work with the print too.
When hovered on a link, the background changes:
And like these too:

It will be reviewed today. Hopefully to go online very soon!

Website Re-design

My website got a re-design.

Some stuff that I wanted to do for a long time.
Especially 1) larger images, 2) less clicking more continuous scrolling. As well as, 3) responsive design for mobile and tablet devices, 4) creating some organization for photo section.

The first page is a lot of fun with animation GIFs when you hover. Meant to provide a bit of a random navigation for different pages in the site, but ended up quite fun.

Still extensive use of Yava font for the navigations but notice it got thicker strokes.

Here's the old design:
