Richie Hawtin presents ENTER.Week 4 (July 25th, 2013)

Richie Hawtin's party Enter. at Space Ibiza was possibly one of my favorite clubbing experiences ever.
This being Ibiza needless to say about the great crowd, and this being Richie Hawtin needless to say about the music. In addition to those, the simple and effective communication of the concept was compelling and successfully differentiated itself from other bling-bling parties more common in Ibiza.
You could argue that this whole Enter. concept (minimalism, zen-style, black only color scheme) may seem just like a superficial fashion that is to be consumed. I cannot comment on its shallowness (the concept is probably has both deep and superficial sides to it) but I personally felt that the strictness of the concept was the thing that helped making the party different from others that I have experienced before.

Music with a-Jays One Earphones

I recently got a new set of a-Jays One earphones from mobile phone accessories. They do shipping to Japan too.

I've never known this brand Jays before, but apparently it's a Swedish earphone brand, and the earphones came with rather fancy (and unnecessarily heavy) packaging. They also have a fancy website showcasing all their pretty looking earphones. It is quite clear that they are a design-driven and well-branded company, but somehow I never came across them in any outlets before. Maybe they sell solely on the web? I don't really know. In any case, they make lovely sets of earphones and I'm rather happy with what I got.

The ones I got sound alright, nothing too superb as they are £25 earphones after all, but they're much better looking than the ones in the same price range.
I love their matt texture and the thick cables are meant to be tangle free. To be honest they do tangle a bit, but the untangling them is nothing compared to the pain I went through with my previous earphones; I'm definitely satisfied about that.
As a consequence, the cables are rather thick and they do stand out more than normal earphones around. Not that this matters much.

They are good for people like me, who are not too fussed about the sound of earphones, but would like to have decent ones within a cheap price range. Their great design is definitely a big bonus and make them attractive choice over all other competitors.
Also, they are for people who buy all their gadgets black, and cannot stand white earphones that Apple is sticking to. I like how Jays only make black products, as I pretty much only buy black anything.

I'm really good at breaking or losing earphones and I decided I won't invest too much money in them. I liked Nixon's earphones, but I broke them so quickly (not their fault but mine, just be fair), I never actually went back to them. As far as my limited knowledge of cheap and decent earphones go, I'm quite satisfied with Jays, Nixon and Sony. Nixon has the best looks, Jays is the most practical, and Sony the best price-for-quality (even super cheap ones sound decent and endurable).

So, what I have been listening with these new earphones?
Some super sexy songs.

For instance, I've been addicted to Sade's Smooth Operator. So seductive:
Sade、

This is my number one favorite song by Michael Jackson: Dirty Diana. The sexiest song by Jackson by far.

And a mixture of dance classics from early 00s. I wasn't so into house music back then, but they sound so nice to go back to now.

Take Dirty Vegas. I only started listening to them about a month ago, I don't think I even knew them (this reveals how little I know about music in general). But boy, their self-titled album Dirty Vegas from 2002 sounds still fresh to listen to in 2013. It's one of those albums that I love listening to as a whole and don't care too much about the details of individual tracks.

And the classic. Tiesto's Lethal Industry has been in my Spotify playlist for a while.

And finally some Adele. Her cover of Lovesong by the Cure.
It sounds so much like her other songs, it's hard to believe she didn't write this. This song then to Someone Like You is such an emotional part of her stunning album 21.

Music, 2012

Apart from fully enjoying music in Ibiza during the summer, I've been pretty much staying at home listening to following three albums: Coexist by The xx, Born to Die by Lana Del Rey, and Trilogy by The Weeknd.

In this day and age, where we are literally flooded with new music every day, it's quite rare for me at least, to be  constantly listening to the same music.

1.
The xx Coexist

I've written on this blog before but this album had the most emotional resonance with me than any other album that I encountered in recent years.
I must admit that their first album was musically more exciting as it was something that sounded so new, but this second album represented myself better lyrically and conceptually.

2.
Lana Del Rey Born to Die

I don't think she needs any introduction. A beautiful American singer, who loves nostalgia and she certainly triggers my memories from my teenage years.
Adulthood, 'bad boys', and craziness may not be exactly the things that I lived through, but Del Rey's songs evokes how I was attracted to those things during my youth.
Most of her songs are about girls' point of view on love, but the sadness and shadow of death that threads the album, make it standing out from cheesy romance songs that are around.

3.
The Weeknd TRIOLOGY

It's a compilation album that includes previously freely released three free mix tapes. It therefore is a 30 track 3 hours long piece of art.
Seductive voice (which sounds like a cross between Michael Jackson and John Legend) sings emotional tracks with dark and sad lyrics. Songs are about night life, parties, drug use, and sex, which are definitely not glamorous nor cool like conventional R&B songs. Just like The xx, there are many songs about the end of relationship and heartbreaks.
His musical talent is simply so huge, it's a kind of music that is hard not to be moved.

Not as much as the three albums above but the ones that I also liked:

Swedish House Mafia – Until One
Jake Bugg – Jake Bugg
Delilah – From The Roots Up

Swedish House Mafia:
Totally a shame that they are splitting. Sweden's biggest club rockers' last album was definitely as great as always.

Jake Bugg and Delilah are both from England. This country never seem to run out of young musical talents.

Jake Bugg:
I always end up liking singers that has similar voice quality to Bob Dylan's and Jake Bugg definitely falls into that category.

Delilah :

2011 was a year of Adele. Without a doubt 2012 was a year for PSY. Whenever hearing this song, you just can't help but to ride that invisible horse.
Thoroughly enjoyed recent Monocle The Globalist's review of the economical benefit that this one song brought to South Korea.

Coexist – the xx

Coexist by the xx is certainly my favorite album of 2012. I know 2012 hasn't ended but I'm pretty sure of this one, and Lana Del Rey's Born to Die to most likely chart my second.

I really enjoyed reading their interview on Pitchfork. Musically, this album is a continuation of their first album, but lyrically they are quite different. I liked their abstraction from the first album, especially metaphors for sex, but I am also liking their directness in this second album. The first album was shy and yet very sexual, especially off 20 years olds, but that you cannot find in this one. They still sing about love. They still sing about "you" against "me", and there is still no "she" or "he" or any other titles, but this time they introduced "we" and "us" which they couldn't have done in any better way than in the song Our Song.

I was fortunate enough to see them live on the release of this album. Despite being extremely ill, I could tell how talented these three folks are. It was beautiful to say the least. It was a beautiful beautiful evening.

The xx

I cannot stop listening to this. My daily addiction. Beaut.

AND EVERYDAY
I AM LEARNING ABOUT YOU
THE THINGS THAT NO ONE ELSE SEES
AND THE END COMES TOO SOON
LIKE DREAMING OF ANGELS
AND LEAVING WITHOUT THEM
AND LEAVING WITHOUT THEM
You can find lyrics of the xx songs on their website.

Yava for James Leevo

My Yava font was used for a German musician, James Leevo's album Home. Quite different feel from the implementation by vintage fashion Discode Vintage.
When I first put Yava font online, I wasn't expecting any of this to happen and it's quite exciting other creatives using my font.

Here is the trailer for his album Home:

Latest information can be found on James Leevo facebook page.

Music, 2011

My personal best album from 2011:
1. The English Riviera, Metronomy
2. Suck it and See, Arctic Monkeys
3. Pala, Friendly Fires
4. On a Mission, Katy B
5. A Creature I Don't Know, Laura Marling
6. Mademoworld, Mademoiselle Yulia
7. In the Grace of Your Love, The Rapture
8. Eye Contact, Gang Gang Dance

Another amazing musical year. Particularly the success of female artists (Adele, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Beyonce) was inspirational.

Although it was not released this year, if I were to name one album that I listened to more than any other this year, that would be this: Frank, by Amy Winehouse. RIP Amy.

In 2010, I went to 13 concerts, and this year I went only to 6. I'll name Laura Marling gig as the best one of those 6. One of my favorite songs by her is now remembered as a whistle song:

2011 certainly was a turbulent year. 2001 was the year when I moved abroad for the first time, and that of course was also the year of 9/11. 10 years on and I would say 2011 was as dramatic, if not more, as 2001. Both in terms of international affairs and also for my personal life.

Arab spring, Japanese earthquake and nuclear crisis, countless protests, English riots, deaths of Bin Laden, Steve Jobs and Kim Jong Il... Trips to Indonesia, Hong Kong, Macau, Amsterdam, Berlin, along with various other places. Lots of group works, first time freelancing, D&AD award, and notorious dissertation... Visa process, first time living on my own, getting bank accounts, working at an advertising company, well, what else?
I am all calm right now but thinking back, what an intensive year that was!

I am scared for 2012, but I know next few months will be the best months of my life. God knows what happens after the graduation in July, but till then I will make the best out of it.

BIG IN JAPAN

I cannot believe, I'm flying back to Japan in a week and a bit.
Thus I'm listening to Big in Japan by Martin Solveig. I don't think neither the music nor its music video are particularly well-made, as music sounds too much like Hello song and the video doesn't go beyond cool and exotic portrait of Tokyo. 'Big in Japan' typically means Western celebrities who are only famous in Japan (and this surprising phenomena happens quite a lot). This song does have Tokyo-like feel to it, including how if you listen to it for too many times it becomes quite annoying. Anyway, this song is setting my mood for Japan, that's for sure.

I was reading My Dear Bomb by Yohji Yamamoto, and came across this quote:
I completed the course and began working at my mother's dressmaking shop. Elegant madams would come into the shop with magazine clippings, asking us to make them the outfits they saw there. Hourglass figures they had not, but I diligently took their measurements as I grumbled silently to myself about the impossibility of reproducing the magazine look. I hated it. Intensifying my annoyance was the fact that the shop was in the Kabukicho area of Shinjuku, a place overflowing with women whose job was to titillate male customers. They had shaped my image of womanhood since childhood, and I was therefore determined to at all costs avoid creating the cute, doll-like women that some men adore.
Mind you, mainstream Japanese fashion is all about 'the cute, doll-like women that some men adore' but obviously not all girls agree to dress up in such style. And yes, that's probably one of the reasons why I love his work too.

I became more fan of Yohji's work during my last visit in Japan. The reason being includes small things like an amazing customer service that Yohji's stores had. I visited one of his stores twice and my second visit happened few weeks after my first visit. But the women remembered me and remembered exactly what I've tried on at the first time (the exact product and the size). Customer services in Japan tend to get extreme, where shop assistants follow you everywhere and persist on helping you, but the subtlety at Yohji's store was a way more touching.

On Repeat

On repeat: Duran Duran's Girl Panic!

Starring... Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Helena Christensen, Eva Herzigova, and Yasmin Le Bon. Supermodels from 90s altogether. Can't get more fabulous than this.

Directed by world famous Swedish video director, Jonas Akerlund. Nuff said.

Luxurious hotel, groupie girls sleeping, champagne and cocktails... Rockstar cliches, but because supermodels are acting as members of Duran Duran, it gets quite interesting.
Naomi's acting can be questionable but others are quite good. Though, at the beginning of the video, where Naomi wears Dolce & Gabbana bodysuit, furry jacket by Mugler, and Christian Louboutin splash shoes is ohhh-my-gosh. Insanely fit look that is.

There's definitely something about Akerlund's music videos. Striking visuals, interesting story lines, countless collaboration with past and current superstars...

Year of Adele

Sensation in UK and beyond, Adele's '21' has been selling remarkably well. Sure, Adele is amazing, but I'm quite surprised how well she's doing in the US chart. I thought Americans tended to like more gorgeous/sexy (or over-produced) types of female singers.
Interestingly, current UK chart is dominated by female solo artists. Adele '21' tops, Beyonce '4' ranks 2nd, 3rd for Adele '19', and Lady Gaga 'Born This Way' for the 4th. I read some review on Lady Gaga, though it can also be applied to Beyonce, that nowadays only women are singing about freedom and liberty, and that's quite an interesting remark.

I'm in love with Jamie xx remix of Rolling in the Deep.
And I'm still waiting for her album 21 to come on Spotify...

Rolling in the Deep (Jamie xx Shuffle)

Music 2011 (so far) and Basement Jaxx

2011 may be a year of music. I don't think I have never enjoyed listening to new albums as much as I have this year. Surprisingly enough, I've been staying away from gigs, concerts and festivals. Shame.

I, however, did go to Metropole Orkest vs Basement Jaxx yesterday at Barbican Hall, and that was nice with very enthusiastic audience. I wasn't expecting dancing audience at all-seating venue. I love electronic dance music, but I felt sorry for them that they can't yet beat how live instruments make us move and dance so intuitively. Electronic dance music try so hard, try so many different ideas, and they still get defeated. Can't make people dance like they do with live instruments. Sad times. But I still love electro/ dance, and I think their advantage is that they work better on digital/ CD output. I find orchestra is more for live, not really for CDs.

こういうBarbican(音楽ホール)の企画は外れがない。

Spring Playlist 2011 (part.2)

4) Lady Gaga 'Born This Way'
Musically, it's not a genius. How Lady Gaga has approached this album, however, is very interesting. I loved some songs and hated certain songs in the first album, but this album I don't seem to hate any. Difficult second album, tackled well.
She sings about freedom, equality and the never-give-up spirit. She sings for minorities. She uses different languages and sings about religion. There is something very American about those things, but at the same time she is definitely the worldwide superstar of today. Things might seem a little too consciously aimed, but I don't mind that too much yet. When you are so talented and vulnerable, bad adults with money tend to try and suck your talent up (like what happened to Michael Jackson or Britney Spears), but with Gaga you don't really need to worry about that. She's super independent. It's seriously great to see how one person's creativity can have this much effect on the world.
Oh and this album has a lot of 'Jesus' going on.
My favorite track? "Scheiße(DJ White Shadow Mugler)"!

5) Friendly Fires 'Pala'
Friendly Fires got matured. Musically this album has the same sort of concept as the former, but it's much deeper and broader. How they've gotten matured as people had directly been reflected on to the music. Happy, afro, colorful, dancing album, great for the summer.
I'm just in love with the frist track of the album "Live Those Days Tonight", I can't even properly listen to the rest...

Spring Playlist 2011

I definitely don't think "No Music, No Life" applies to me, but perhaps "No Music, No Design Work Done" does. That stressful past week was helped greatly by some great music and I think that's worth thanking for.

1) The Strokes 'Angles'
It's a bit too happy-sounding for my personal liking, but in any case I've been constantly listening to it since its release. A lot of high pitch guitar sound throughout the album, which I love. 'Taken For A Fool' is my favorite track, oh and 'Machu Picchu'.
Taken For A Fool'はかなり好き。

2) Katy B 'On a Mission'
Another great young unpretentious female singer from England (others could include Lily Allen, Adele, Ellie Goulding, Duffy etc).
'On a Mission' single was in Annie Mac's compilation album and that's how I found out about Katy B. Her voice just works so well with dance music. There are so many dance music around but this album remained to be a bit different, although within the album all the songs pretty much have similar idea.

3) Metronomy 'English Riviera'
Metronomy completely nailed the texture in this album. I don't know how else to describe it. Its tactility just feels right.
Lately there are so many songs that sing the names of cities or places. It's a little silly but I often seem to like those songs too. I don't know why, it may to do with my love for traveling or I may portray a dream of visiting such places. Anyway 'The Bay' is my favorite track.
